Here are a few more screens, this time using both the MrMmods Better Light/Better Grass patcher and Misa's HD Texture Overhaul with the Wildgrass enhancer:
I think I like the vanilla look better than the modded textures. But I only know the game through screen captures, playing it unmodified might be a bit of a drag.

I find the texture packs which try to increase the amount of detail turn the look from retro into old ugly FPS.

Agreed. And when you're in caves, you just get completely lost. At least that's what's happened with me on more than one occasion.
For what it's worth, here is a Secondus map. It's not terrific, but it gives a general isometric overview of our map. I've generated a far superior one that uses Google map functionality, but I'm trying to figure the best way to host it.
The map is cool. I actually went wandering the other day and I think I've actually seen almost every building, although I have not wandered underground too often.
That's the only bad thing about the map. There are some really neat things you should see that are under the surface.
- There is Deephall, of course, built by moi. To find it, head southeast from the spawn point and look for a large torch/chimney jutting into the air. There will be an incredibly dense forest on the far side of that torch, which cloaks the Deephall entrance. - There is a huge obsidian vault and catacombs, made by usrName, I believe (I'm sorry if I have misattributed this). To get there, head west from spawn until you come to the water. Just to the south, within eyesight, there will be a small pavilion. Go there and take the ladder down. - Destrucci has made a large system of mines, part of which boasts a very nice checkered floor. Head west from spawn until you get to the city wall. Destrucci's construction is adjacent to the wall. Goeth down. - Midgardsormr (Alex) has this really neat foundry/glass/underground fortress/lava thing somewhere in the vicinity of the free mines. I can't remember how to access it. - Almost due north, and far, far, far up there, Kiey has a desert palace with a sand wall. That can be seen on the map. The above-ground structure is a ruin. The below-ground structure is the uncovered remains of a once-great library, with four "biome rooms" that bear exploring. To get there, see the map. - Andrew has the Cavern of 1,000 Lights, which nobody has found yet. It's pretty difficult to find, but not terribly far away. If I remember correctly, it's on an island...?
REMEMBER: - Clouds always move north. - The above linked map shows north to the left bottom corner. - You can make an in-game compass, but it does not show direction. It shows orientation to the spawn point.

If you look at a block of cobblestone or netherwrack from the top, if you're looking at it so that you can see a correctly oriented L in the top left corner of the texture, you're facing north. Unless, of course, you're using a texture pack.
Because of image size limitations, no. I have a Google map rendered that will let you see me pick my nose on the server, but it's 600mb with several thousand pngs, and I need to find appropriate hosting for it. Uploading it would also require FTP access.
That map looks sweet. Also there is lot's of empty space for building. I almost want to go there and do something, but I'm horrible at getting things done in minecraft and how could I even make anything worth the server? Well I'll be touristing there at least, maybe I'll build a little summer cottage on some beach.

This is mine, the sign must have bugged since I've been on. Trying to build an evil temple of some sort, and discovered that the granularity of the game is too large to make good small-ish statues. I intend to make that room bigger and make a reasonable looking statue in its alcove, but I've been playing other games recently.
Hello, I've been offline for quite a time because of school stuff. Secondus has made amazing progress. I want to contribute and hereby I reapply for membership.

I ran into that issue when building my giant stone face that is weeping lava tears.

Two ways:
The mines beneath Port Cardelocke (the walled chunk of water west of the spawn) connect to it, along with several other mines in that area. There's a natural cavern system there that has been mined and expanded by at least five people, so it's kind of messy.
There's also a secret tunnel in the woods just outside the spawn city (on the western side of the huge wall). This drops you into an underground road, fairly near the fort.

Secondus has become filled with corruption. Find Zen in nature. Save our world.
Ah now I'm in...

Is it possible to get a closer zoom on the map?
