  • Actually, if I was going with the ultimate coding/typing keyboard, assuming I didn't want the compact form factor, I'd just go with a Unicomp buckling spring model. However, it only has 2 key rollover, which makes it less useful for gaming.

As it is, I'm trying to find a good balance between a gaming and typing keyboard for when I buy my next one.

I have a Razer Blackwidow with the Cherry MX Blues and I love the feel of the keys. The noise isn't that bad, and the feedback is excellent. I wouldn't want to go with any softer switches.

If you want to balance the two, get the Rosewill I just got with the reds. The clickyness makes up for the linear pressure to make typing nice, but the linear is perfect for gaming as well. Also, the layout is super standard. And you don't live in NY, so Newegg will ship you one. Whoah! I can't find my keyboard on Newegg or Amazon anymore. Shit.
  • Hmm... maybe I'll just need to find a store with a few keyboards I can try out to see what feels nicest.
  • But for coding/typing I would definitely get the blues.

  • Resurrecting my old Gateway 700XL with a hard drive my father gave me to replace my 200gb Maxtor that was dieing. Found out it has Windows ME on it (good lord). I'm taking some stuff to work tomorrow to try and get it fully running again:
    - Windows 7 OS cds
    - Ubuntu Live on a flash drive
    - Ubuntu Desktop on a CD

Any other recommendations? Imma wipe this bitch and make it work for me again.
  • I'd say Windows 7 will be a stretch. For linux, I've been loving Linux Mint, so you might wanna give that a try.
  • Has anyone here tried Bittorrent Sync? It seems to be a great idea but I can't seem to get it working right. It works fine over the internet but from what I understand its supposed to be able to work over your local network, but I can't get it to. My internet is pretty unreliable here so syncing over that is unusable. I've tried connecting both pc's to an offline router both wired and wireless and neither worked. I temporarily turned off windows firewall on both and still no luck. Anyone else have this issue?
  • If you need a lightweight linux distro I'd suggest Lubuntu.
  • So there are 2 ATA drives in at the moment. One is an old 40 GB my dad gave me, set as the master. The other is an old 200 GB set as the slave, and has some bad sectors on it that I am trying to fix or sort out.

when I installed Windows XP from some recovery CDs to the 40 GB, it actually saw the second 200 GB drive. However it wouldn't let me delete anything or format the drive from windows. When I had windows restart and do a scan of the drive nothing seemed to happen and eventually the screen went dark. After that I couldn't get Windows XP to start properly.

should I even bother trying to resurrect the 200 GB drive at all?

Don't bother. Maybe try spinrite if there's data you want, but if it's problematic now, it'll just fuck you later even if you get it going.

Agreed, but if it's just for fun you can use these tools as well.

  • Okay, so I dumped the 200 drive out entirely, but now the system refuses to recognise the 40 GB as the master. Funny thing is that when I had both drives in and the jumpers set the 200 to the slave and the 40 to the master, it insisted on making the old 200 drive the d Drive, but still running everything off of it. The 40 currently has nothing on it and is set to master. When I took out the 200 entirely, it told me that there was no hard drive at all in the system. If I boot from a Windows XP Professional CD, it finds the hard drive but tells me that I cannot use it. I can't find a reason for why does this. I'm still open to suggestions.
  • 40GB isn't enough for Windows anyway, so don't bother. Buy one 500GB drive and use that for everything.
  • Am I right in thinking that this line in an email from a yahoo address contains the senders actual computer IP?

  • Um... look up who owns the IP address. If it's an ISP of some sort, possibly?

Nope. Basically can't trust anything in email headers to be valid. It can all be forged. Also, those IPs when accurate are the IPs of mail servers, not client computers.
  • The IP that was listed was for my home router (external IP). I had emails from two "different" people that I suspect to be the same person (under my own roof no less). All of the messages contain different tracking IPs for how the email went around the world but they also all list my router IP.

This was not sent by a computer savy person and even though I showed this forensic data to her she claims to know nothing about this.

You can't trust email headers. If those emails were sent from in your house, the most likely scenario is someone's computer has malware on it that is sending spam.
  • One of them I know came from her and the other was supposed to be from someone outside the country. I have long suspected they are the same person and I see the matching source IPs as proof.
  • Ok, more on my PC necromancy:
Decided that, since both HD's are getting alerts under Ubuntu lite for bad sectors, a new HD is in order. The tough part is finding a compatible one for the old system. Any advice on how or where to figure out what to get?

    Just buy one?

  • With hard drives, if the connector fits it's pretty much guaranteed to work. (That's ignoring things like size limits on Operating systems, but I don't think that's an issue in this case).

I just thought of something. So there are those websites where you click something and somehow a company somewhere donates a small amount of money to a charity. How hard would that be to automate and just make a shit ton of clicks to those sites? Now obviously you don't want it to go too often or they would know something was up, but it seems like it shouldn't be that hard. I know I've seen people do stuff like that with online polls using a firefox plugin, so it doesn't seem like it would be too complex. I don't plan on doing it, nor do I have the know-how but I just like the idea of using something shiesty like that for good.

  • It would take about two seconds to set up an autoclicker. A bit longer to set up a proper http requester.
  • That's what I thought. I was thinking you could use random number generator to generate waiting times between clicks so that it wouldn't look like someone automated it. Are autoclickers able to use proxies or spoof addresses? Most of those click charities have a one click per day limit.

I don't think you realize what an auto clicker is. It automates a click for you. It would be exactly like you clicked, except a program did it for you.

That said, what you want is still in Pegu's answer.

  • Apparently the keyboard I have has blue switches, not red. So whatever I said before is way wrong. For supposedly non-linear switches, it sure feels like they have the same resistance throughout the entire stroke. They are indeed very clicky. The Internet says they might be bad for gaming because it could be hard to double-tap. I can Nintendo finger these things like crazy, and it registers every press.
  • I took a depressing senior year of high school off! I decreased my internet communications by like, 85%! I am coming out of hibernation. Hello.

I need some advice. As a graduation present, I am going to receive a laptop. I need some advice as to what that laptop should be. I can supplement funds given to me to either purchase or craft a laptop, with the help of a nerd buddy. I am going to use Windows 7 or 8. I don't appreciate BS tablet/flippy monitors. It should run Photoshop reasonably well, and have lots of room/RAM for games, a good video card- etc. I don't want to simply get the most RAM or whatever if I won't need it. I am perfectly willing to receive some instruction in this area- here are some of the computers I was considering:

    MSI - 17.3" Laptop - 16GB Memory - 750GB Hard Drive 128GB Solid State Drive

    Alienware - 18.4" Laptop - 16GB Memory - 1TB Hard Drive 1TB Hard Drive

    Toshiba - Qosmio 17.3" Laptop - 16GB Memory - 2TB Hard Drive

I am both smart and obscenely spoiled (and have an income), so money/difficulty aren't much of a worry.

This is my first computer of my very own- other than say, a modern phone- and I'll probably need to use it for a while.

If this request is dumb, sorry- I am paralyzed by all my possible options as a consumer.
  • 17.3" Laptop
    No.
    18.4" Laptop
    Double no.
    17.3" Laptop
    No.

17 inches is way too big for a laptop. 18 is absurd. I mean, if you really want to haul that beast around, fine, but if you're going to get one that big, you might as well get (or build) a desktop.
