  • Yeah Castellan was great, it's suuuper light on rules and requires lots of forethought/strategy, which is what I like. Though It might actually be a little too simple honestly, its like a really light Carcassone with less randomness. like Pete said, tho, we only did two player, so maybe the strategies open up more w/ four people.
  • I consider it a miracle that it has happened so often. I really want to ask these people HOW they met at PAX. My guess, Pokemons.
I'm curious now. I kind of want to put together an actual survey for geeks about their relationships and conventions. It would be good research for my book anyway... I guess that's a project for the "after May" bin.

Speed dating at New York Comic Con. This event even got its own TLC special (which I did not watch, but might give you more of the info you are looking for).
I appreciate the suggestion, but it's doubtful. I'm looking for a more overall survey of geek couples to see how they hooked up. That Event is going to cover only a very small subset of the geek populace.

  • Nuri, do you have that photo of us all dressed up? Scott disbanded the GroupMe group before I could save it on my phone. Thanks!

Also, I am interested in this Castellan and will lookout for it when I have a chance.
  • Yeah, I have it. It's not phenomenal, but it's decent. I'll get 'em onto the computer soon.
  • Man, even on Youtube it's still awesome.

    This book is magic.

Don't forget, Scott: you owe me a new copy.

Dude, he ALREADY asked if your address was the same so he could order you a new one. He's on top of that shit.

    PS, I told him yes.

  • He did? I must've missed it.
  • Contact info thread. It seems to be shifty lately. Up and down on the topic list. But yeah.
  • I really didn't take any pictures or looked out for them, but my favorite cosplays I saw:

Mr. T with giant bazooka and the 4 Clap Traps.
  • Gotta say that PAX is working its magic on me. I spent a fair amount of time in the Kickstarter room, talking with people who are pursuing something that they absolutely love and are seeing it succeed (mostly). It has encouraged me to push a bit harder in my current career, which is a good thing. Especially since one of my friends just posted a job opportunity that looks incredible, and I would be dumb to pass up.

Of course, it requires me to get Secret clearance and do some interviews and all... in the midst of hardcore wedding planning. This will be fun.

Bah, Secret is nothing. It's the Top Secret they start talking to everyone you know.
  • Yeah? Do you have Secret clearance? I'm actually very curious as to what will actually happen in that process. Not because I have anything to hide, but because I want to make sure it won't overwhelm everyone who is already involved with wedding planning. We can take this to PM if you want.
  • To PM! *whoooooosh

Secret clearance is not that big of a deal, as it's the basic requirement to work in any defense-related field. It will not be a big burden on the people involved with your wedding planning. As for getting through that sort of process, the key is always to provide full information and just be 100% honest.

Solution: beach wedding. Planning: done. More time for secret clearance.

I know you're joking, but as soon as I read that I immediately thought up a dozen reasons why that would be more complicated than the way we're currently doing it.. which is in a public park.
  • You guys aren't talking about PAX. This makes me sad.

I just read up on the two "controversies" that happened at PAX. I actually bothered to go to Kotaku to read about the booth babe girl and the comments. I also read Gabe's recent post about it.

I have to say all the negative comments against PAX with the whole nudity vs. violent games is dumb. I understand where they are coming from, but the whole thing with booth babes and PAX is not about censorship, but of the culture with making girls as sex symbols in gaming.

I also think all the negative comments against PAX were from haters because they couldn't be at PAX. Just sayin'. =P
  • People were just mad because they didn't get to ogle the scantily-clad babe.

No Pants Dude was just an idiot. I mean, you signed an agreement saying you wouldn't do it again, and then you did it again. What did you think would happen?

Nobody gets special treatment at PAX. For all the love the Enforcers give us, they'd rightfully boot us if we pulled anything like that no matter how good our panels are.
  • I don't go to PAX to ogle at scantily-clad booth babes. If I am on the expo hall floor and am looking for people to talk to about a game, I want to talk to someone who actually knows something about it. From what I understand, booth babes are more of a way to attract attention and thus may not know a lot of stuff about the product they're presenting.

So I like where it seems like the industry is going in general, as I want to be attracted to a game by what is on display on the screens and at the booth. Not because of the gravitational pull of large objects.

  • Looking at the "discussions" pertaining to the PAX controversies, and also thinking about past Penny Arcade controversies, made me realize something. Obviously each individual person has different opinions about what is or is not offensive that is unique to each individual person. But there seem to be somewhat distinct camps of people when it comes to when and where offensive things are appropriate.

Some people think that offensive things are never appropriate. If they think something is offensive, they don't want to see it anywhere at any time in any place. Hide ALL the boobies.

Some people just don't give a shit. Maybe they don't think anything is offensive, or they think it's always ok to be offensive. They'll walk around an elementary school with a Goatse.

People like us, and PA (though I'm obviously not speaking for them), seem to understand that the Internet is lawless and real life is not. Looking at all the porn or dick drawings on the Internet is totally awesome. Actually being all naked in a space with a lot of people who didn't ask you see you naked is not OK. If I'm playing Counter-Strike and someone on the voice chat is laying down all the slurs, I know they probably aren't actually racist or homophobic or anything. It's just shitcock that I ignore. If someone said the same stuff in person, then they are in deep shit.

PAX has seven rules. The people who were kicked out broke rule 5 (Don't harass anyone) and the dancing guy possibly broke rule 7 (Don't mess with things that aren't yours) since it wasn't his panel.
  • As I said before, I didn't get to hang out enough. Also I'm sorry if I was a little slow or gruff at times, I never quite got enough food or sleep in me and I was running on adrenaline and then crashing out half the time. If anyone was worried that they might have offended me in any way, don't be, I think everybody I met from the FRC boards was awesome. Trust me when I say that I can understand that it's difficult to remember every single person and be 100% friendly and cheery about everything. I've got thick skin, and the PAX-force seems to keep me super positive as much as I can be.

Almost everything I did at PAX was awesome. I think I stepped on some toes a couple times, said something slightly the wrong way others, and had a difficult time keeping everything in order. I promise I'll be competent at Bohnanza by Prime, should that skill be necessary. I probably won't ever be good and jungle speed... pattern/shape recognition is not how I think really. And I'll have to settle down and stand still some more when playing a game standing up. You all should see me when I run table-top games... I walk all around the table all the time. I'm also adding Power Grid to my games, and whenever the second printing of Eclipse comes out I'm going to buy that.

Not sure how you got that out of my post, but no I did not say that in any way, shape nor form.

    Also, fixed that for you.

    He be trollin yo.
  • ...well played.
  • *flips over troll bean card* DAMN
  • So, if I did put together a print run of a "Stink Bean Mafia" style version of Mafia/Werewolf with all the rules and the proper nouns, how many of you would buy it? I'd sell it at the cost of printing most likely. ;^)
