What anime are you watching? v2.0

  • I'm trying (and failing) to watch Bakemonogatari. Serious let down after Madoka. I also have been unimpressed by Golgo 13, though having said that I am already being killed by him from 3 kilometers away. The one thing I was able to watch all of was Eden of the East. I found it interesting, but poorly executed. Takizawa was a boring character, and I can't imagine no one in the world taking action after TWO MISSILES ATTACKED JAPAN! Seriously, after 9/11 we invaded 2 countries and passed legislature borderline 5th Amendment violation. And Japan just brushed it off? Unbelievable.

Almost done with Princess Tutu. There are many ridiculous moments, but the music is really enjoyable and the animation is usually of a good quality. My only minor gripe about the style is that while yes, I understand that Tutu is older than Duck/Ahiru is supposed to be, they can't seem to decide exactly how much older. Her anatomy changes very frequently. I'm not just talking boob size and exposure either. This is particularly notable during the first major climax in the show around episode 13. Still, the show has kept me curious. Not a A+ anime in my book, maybe a high 'B' since I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to watch it again, but certainly worth watching at least once.

Not every country has the same mentality as Amurrka about these things. Besides, the whole "there were no deaths" thing probably reduced the cultural impact a smidge. It might also be how Japan has only a semblance of a standing military now in their Defense Force; they're not about to be invading a middle-eastern country anytime soon.
  • So, End of Eva.....
I doubt there is a single "moral" in End of Evangelion. However, in a strange roundabout abstract way.... yes, that would be one of the messages. Emotions are natural and hurting other humans is a part of life.

Last time I checked we didn't confiscate their intelligence organizations. I wouldn't expect an invasion, but I would expect an investigation. Furthermore, I would expect that the lack of casualties would increase the cultural impact rather than diminish it. It would make it seem like "Ha, you tried to kill us, but we beat you!" And -- again -- the sheer amount of property damage would cause someone higher up to raise an eyebrow.
  • Just finished Stein's Gate I guess. I can't not give that an A, personally. There were three weak-ish episodes, but overall the payoff was pretty high for me. I feel like it would be wrong of me to give it an A- or a B+, but I expect some others will score it there or lower.

Tiger and Bunny is, at least right now in my mind, shaping up more in the A to A+ for me personally.

Maybe given some time away from them they'll fall down a little, but right now knowing what I know I have to give them both high scores. I know I thought Trigun was an A+ for a while after it came out, and now I just think of it as solid A/A-, so it wouldn't be the first time.

  • How does the Steins;Gate cartoon compare to the game?

This. I will admit that for most of the show, I was pretty meh on it since most of the characters aren't that interesting and it didn't really seem to have a direction. But then there was the "OH SHIT" moment, and it's been great since then.

No sex. They couldn't fully abandon the haremness from the game in a few episodes. Centered on the other 'girls'.

The side characters are nice. The last arc has definitely been awesome. Learn much, much more about Wild Tiger and then get into OH SHIT territory. First half of the show was mediocre in comparison, mostly because Bunny wasn't that interesting a character.

Have you ever even seen the game? But alright, they added porn-y bits to it, I guess.

I made an educated guess. Seems I was right. Regardless, the few comments I've read suggest that it's faithful enough. You're only going to get one episode centred on the side females though, the rest is all Christiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiina, and Tuturuustory.

  • Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is significantly more fucked up than the original series was as well as being much better.
  • To all those of you who have watched all of Durarara, do you remember the UFO episode?
  • To all those of you who have watched all of Durarara, do you remember the UFO episode?
    Yes. Why?
  • To all those of you who have watched all of Durarara, do you remember the UFO episode?
No... what happened in that episode?

    Yes. Why?
I was watching the 2nd box set of Durarara (german release) yesterday, and the episode came up. I had absolutely no memory of it. It was kind of bizarre. Probably because the episode doesn't tie in with any of the main story lines.

It was bonus episode that was DVD only (if I remember correcly).

I just checked with the fansubs on my and it seems you are correct. At the very least it is not part of the Fansubs I have, as episode 13 of the fansubs is the labeled episode 14 on the DVD, and episode 13 on the DVD is the UFO one.

The only DVD only episode I remember is the one where Shizuo's brother is doing this couples search in Ikebukuro, and of course crazy shit is going down all around it. I was actually wondering of they were going to include that episode on the DVDs, and judging from the inclusion of the UFO (which I apparently had never seen before), it will be the case that the DVD only episodes will be in there. I do like however that the UFO episode has the first opening, and kind of functions as a buffer and a breather episode between the two main storylines. Thank you Beez Entertainment for that.

The only thing that bothers me is that disc 3 is five episodes, and disc 4 is four episodes. It should have been reversed, because the last episode on disc 3 is the first episode with the 2nd opening and the first episode of the 2nd main storyline. It would have been better had they made it so that the start of the 2nd storyline starts with the 4th discs. Thus, if you wanted to only rewatch the 2nd storyline for some odd reason, you'd save on switching DVDs once. It's just a minor gripe though.

Overall, the recommendation of the Durarara box sets stands, and since they also include english subtitles, this is definitely a series to get if you have a region 2 capable DVD player.

  • I guess I never doubted that there would be a Tiger and Bunny season 2, which I will watch, but I always feel let down by these sort of endings.
  • So, No.6. I finished it.
It's a SciFi dystopia/ post-apocalyptic survival story with a bromance between two tough pretty boys who waver between friendship and animosity. It also has strong female side characters and cute rats who are actually cool robots.
Well, gosh darnit, this show turned out to be a let down. It should not have been, but the pacing was really bad, and the whole hive mind organism plot was really meh. Also, Shion was a boring character. I wanted to like him, but he was so bland except the few times he would wig out when someone did something to Rat, (or even just dissed him.) Since you get more of his inner feelings in the books, he's a lot more tolerable and events seem to flow along a little better, but still.
Why did this show not do anything for me? There was dystopian laboratory jail, and fighting with lots of guns and grenades, and crazy microwave tanks. There was boy-kissing, and fistfights followed by making up, and dangerous tough pretty boys. There was death and devotion. However, I didn't feel any emotion watching this show. I rolled my eyes at a few parts. I was bummed out that it didn't turn out better.
I did like that it was a show with a gay relationship that wasn't the main focus, and I did like when the standard anime trope of "I want to protect you" came up, the other character was like "Fuck that! I want to be your equal."

Was it confirmed that the new project is a new season?

@gomily, there you go ruining any remaining chance the show had. Fuck it, deleting episodes for games as we speak.

I imagine there will be, based on the popularity of it. What I was more thinking of is the way the series ended. If it had ended on episode 24, a season 2 would have to "pick up" a bit differently, but after episode 25 it's actually pretty easy to kickstart from.
  • I think I'm gonna watch this Tiger & Bunny show. But I didn't see it on torrents or crunchyroll. Where is it at?

  • I'm inbetween anime -- which means I'm watching RomeoxJuliet. That show is crazy. Gonzo is great at making adaptations of things that are bayshore insane, but still make perfect sense.
  • Last night, I forced our resident Joe Boomer into watching Madoka. By marathoning all of it. Totally worth it.
