What anime are you watching? v2.0

  • I thought I saw you there last night, Knox! Those movies were really good.

I really liked Only Yesterday. The facial expressions were the best. I also like how they showed Taeko's cheeks everytime she smiled. I really want to own that movie, although I really don't know if Disney will pick it up since it's not really a children's movie.

I liked Ocean Waves as well, even though it was frustrating seeing how overdramatic and manipulative Rikako is. Still a good movie, but something I wouldn't necessarily watch again or own.

I want to watch Porco Rosso on Monday, but I may be busy. :(
  • I also want to add that I liked both films because it was a nice change of most of the Ghibli films I've seen in regards to it not having and fantasy elements. It was nice real life stuff.

Also Only Yesterday had me relate so much to Taeko in regards to self realization about her issues and relationships. I really loved her sparkly eyes.
  • I also saw Only Yesterday in a theater a couple weeks back. Lovely movie.

Rikako is a bitch. Ocean Waves is okay, but frustrating.
I really like Only Yesterday / Omohide Poroporo. The scene where they are picking the flowers and the very last credits scene are so great.

That scene with the slapping. People cheered. Also many people didn't clap as much after Ocean Waves vs. Only Yesterday.
  • The only complaint I really had with Only Yesterday is that it seems to stretch out way too long. There were a lot of scenes that didn't really add to the film, and I think some reduction would've given it a better pace. But I definitely recognize that of the two, it definitely had the broader appeal. I just personally liked Ocean Waves a bit more because I could relate a lot more to Taku and Yutaka and their friendship. Rikako is definitely manipulative and unlikable, but it made me happy that at least Taku recognized it, even if he still wanted her in the end.
  • I finished Avatar: The Last Airbender. It was as good as I'd expected it to be, given how much the rest of my family had liked it. And of course, I love cabbage man.

I watched Dead Leaves yesterday on streaming Netflix. It's 85% style, 14% substance, and 1% heavily armed bizarro newborn baby. If you like the first 5 minutes, you'll like the rest (it's an OAV, less than an hour long) so it's worth a try if you have Netflix.
  • Finished Avatar myself Wednesday. Fun. I have to go through adventure time at some point now.
  • Finished School Rumble. I enjoyed the entire 52 + 2 episode run, even though as a series it never went anywhere at all and the characters barely developed.

    What's wrong with me? :-)

I enjoyed Dead Leaves, but wouldn't want to watch it more than once. :)
  • Only 1% heavily armed bizarro newborn baby? That's 99% too few.

Agreed. But surprisingly, I've never seen an anime with a higher ratio of heavily armed bizarro newborn baby.

I'm pretty sure Funky Boy qualifies.

A Dead Space animated movie exists, so you should check that out if you want to see more heavily armed bizarro newborn babies. They're a pretty common enemy in the games, so it would be safe to assume that they would be in the movie.

Has anybody else seen Dead Leaves? I'd be curious to hear what people thought of it. Also
the truly unusual thing about the newborn baby is the way it exits the womb. Though I'm not sure that's any weirder a way to come into being than the transition to Funky Boy.

The manga has a crazy ending, seriously I never expected that.
I prefer that one from the anime better.

  • I finished Giant Robo OVA today. I probably would have enjoyed it more had I read the related manga (it's an homage to a whole body of work), but it basically had Johnny Sakko and his flying robot, which was one of my favorite shows as a kid, so that make me happy.

I started in on Fruits Basket this weekend. So far, I'm enjoying it. (And I've already been told that if I want the whole story, I gotta read the manga too.)

At least the manga has a resolution...

  • I'm currently alternating between watching Hajime no Ippo & Initial D, about 3 episodes of each at a time.
  • I'm sort of without an Anime right now. I'm casually watching Dragonauts: The Resonance but it's more like a guilty pleasure.

I'm considering going through all of the Project A-ko stuff again with my teen.
  • How much Gundam have you watched? You can never watch enough Gundam.
    (Spoiler: I'm lying.)
  • LOL

Gundam oddly doesn't appeal to me at all, and I generally enjoy Mecha. I like Macross/Robotech. I like Venus War. I'm pretty picky about my mecha.

Which Gundam did you watch? They vary a great deal.

I honestly don't recall. At some point the giant mecha sprouted angel wings and I groaned and turned it off.

    That's Gundam Wing.

You should watch the original Gundam movie trilogy, Gundam SEED (not Destiny), 08th MS team, war in the pocket, etc.

Don't watch G Gundam because windmill gundam.

  • Now I have to watch it just because Tequila Gundam.
  • If I recall from Gerald's "Americans in Anime" panel, there's also a point in G-Gundam where Douglas MacArthur shoots a giant laser beam from the Statue of Liberty and blows up Neo-Tokyo. Subtle.
  • OK so I'm probably going to watch "Sword Art Online" given that it's themed around some stuff that is very much in my wheelhouse.
