  • No, you need to watch G-Gundam. It should be an essential watch for every anime fan.
  • What's the long-form name? Are there more G-Gundams than Mobile Fighter, or are Gundam naming conventions actually logical for once?

It's just Mobile Fighter G-Gundam. They unfortunately did not make more shows in the Mobile Fighter series, I can't fathom why.

Is simple my friend, the world could not be able to handle such an awesomeness!
The most this world can handle is this:

Lets not forget the fallen heroes of yore, like this one, who saved us from surely demise from the dino-sympathizers

Dude, I was forgetting Giant Robo. For shame!

  • I'm currently alternating between watching Hajime no Ippo & Initial D, about 3 episodes of each at a time.
You should totally add some Hokuto no Ken to that mix.

Finished School Rumble. I enjoyed the entire 52 + 2 episode run, even though as a series it never went anywhere at all and the characters barely developed.

    What's wrong with me? :-)
You enjoy entertainment. Character development is also not needed in a comedy. There's also another 2-episode OVA along side the two 26-episode seasons and 2-episode OVA you've seen. You might want to look that one up as well.
At least the manga has a resolution...
The manga was still running when the 2 TV series were made. The second OVA I mentioned was made after the manga finished. It might cover the resolution.
OK so I'm probably going to watch "Sword Art Online" given that it's themed around some stuff that is very much in my wheelhouse.
Guilty pleasure for me, even though the first episode was horrendous in parts.

  • I think I watched "Extra Classes". I'll have to look up what the other one is and see if Netflix has it.

That's the first OVA made after the first season. Then the second season, then two years before the second OVA.
  • List me off some anime I should recommend to young persons that think they are "really into anime" but havn't really seen anything.

I gave them Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop as required viewing.

I've been forcing my 13 year old to watch Cowboy Bebop. Half the time, she pulls out her phone and texts. I don't get the kids these days...

FLCL, Eva, Trigun, Gurren Lagann, Madoka, any of the Gundams, Shin Mazinger Z, Giant Robo, Eureka Seven, and the list goes on.

I have the same problem with my grandma. And my dad. I don't think it's a youth thing, seeing as I don't do that (unless the show sucks, of course).

I think suggesting Cowboy Bebop isn't a great suggestion for your target group. Eva might be a decent suggestion, but I feel like there's better suggestions to make with the preface of "If you're really into anime then this". Then you can see if they are actually really into anime (unless you already know), or not and go from there. How old are these kids?
  • Gurren Lagan and Eureka Seven are a little out of place in that list. I don't recognize Madoka.

Big O is probably high on my list of "things you should see to be well rounded in anime".

Yes but she's a self-professed "anime nut", by which she means stuff like Ouran and Clannad and basically nothing else.

    15/16
  • Madoka is actually only about a year old. It's also the best anime to come out in over a decade.

Utena for sure. Also Princess Tutu.

Did you not read the premise? These young people think they're really into anime. Though you might have a small point in the mass appeal of Gurren Lagann (spell it right boy!)

    You don't watch enough anime.

Cowboy Bebop scores big points with me by virtue of being hand animated, and very skillfully. That puts it on my "must see in order to be indoctrinated" list.

I'm looking to round her out, not reinforce her bullshit. ;-)

In her defense, she's getting better. I got her to watch all of Pani Poni Dash, which I feel was rehabilitative.

Utena and Tutu are good gateways from her bullshit to real anime. You have to start from where she is and bring her to where you are.

  • Isn't Utena the one where the lesbians transform into cars and get attacked by an ambulatory car wash..? Am I mixing titles up again?
  • edited July 2012
If she likes romance, she may like it with the fantasy and war elements in The Vision of Escaflowne.

As for Utena, it's only in the movie.

Yes, but you also need something that will catch her attention. Utena initially looks similar but changes very quickly as a show and, most importantly, is good.

EDIT: Oh jesus how did I forget Escaflowne I'm an idiot.

She's thirteen, she likes angst, which she pronounces "romance". :-)
