I've been playing a lot more Rock Band lately, and I am primarily a drummer. I don't use a MIDI drum kit, but I just got the Rock Band 3 pro drum kit as a birthday present from some family members (I was drumming on some sad, sad Rock Band 1 drums). I'll let you know how that one is once I crack open the box and mess around with it. I know that the good MIDI kits tend to run around $300, but this is just second-hand info so I don't know what specific models and such. I would consider asking a Rock Band forum.
That's what I've been trying to do, but the official Harmonix forum is having a dumb policy implemented about asking technical questions, and the scorehero forums are blocked at work (which is rather bizarre considering the rockband.com forums are not.)
Anyway, at least I found a list of MIDI kits that work with RB3 drum mode and the Mad Catz Midi Adapter for the X-Box 360 on the rockband.com forums. I don't think this list is complete, but the ones that are on it are confirmed to work: Roland HD-1 Yamaha DT Explorer Yamaha DD 65 Alesis DM5 Session Pro DD506 Simmons SD5K Yamaha DTX550K Yamaha DTX900K

Pretty much every fun site is blocked at my work except this forum.
If you do make a decision, please post back and let us know how the MIDI drums worked out. I am definitely curious.
Use your favorite remote desktop software to get into your computer at home and use that to browse the internet?
I administer everything where I work so they can't blacklist anything from me, I'm the one who write the list!
If I had a job I didn't care about, then definitely. I work for the military, so I try not to dick around with things too much. We are allowed to use the internet for personal use, but circumventing blocks and stuff is a quick path to a meeting with HR. Have to be real careful not to do anything relating to my other side jobs writing for MTV and Wired, or it can be looked at as inappropriate use of taxpayer dollars.
I'll be on a buying streak soon, cause there's lot of fun singles that still came out recently. Also, there's a contest going around where they'll be giving 30 people 100 Rock Band songs to download. I'm really hoping to win.
I agree wholeheartedly. That song rocks and there is a bevy of great stuff on the store right now.
My wife and brother-in-law combo-ed up to buy me a set of Rock Band 3 drums as a birthday surprise. They are awesome! Pro Drums is soooooo much fun and they work so well. My old Rock Band 1 drums were falling apart and leading to a lot of missed notes. I promptly shattered a bunch of high scores with the new set. The plan right now is to go through 5 songs on each difficulty tier at expert and see where I crap out. I've gone through the first 3 tiers so far and still getting 5 stars, but I don't know how much longer I can go until I hit songs that will make my leg spontaneously combust. Speaking of leg, biggest surprise was that the set comes with built-in port for second bass pedal. I plugged in my old bass pedal (a RB2 one since I snapped the original in half). I haven't learned the double bass technique yet, but I'm gonna need it.
Currently testdriving an electronic drum kit I might buy (150€ including a small amp). It works with Rock Band and I'm happy with the kit so I'll probably buy it. I only do not have a base pedal at the moment. I've tried any way with 29 Fingers by The Konks (because you only need two lousy drums).
Only now I have to reconfigure one of my rooms to fit the thing and a couch next to it.
Okay, a real necro-bump here, because Rock Band's been so weird with 2012 DLC, nothing but 3/4 Song Packs to real ho-hum response. But I saw this on Amazon, that's REALLY TEMPTING ME.
Rock Band 3 Fender Precision Bass Bundle - $54.00 (Xbox 360) Rock Band 3 Mustang Pro-Guitar Bundle – $89.99 (Xbox 360) Rock Band 3 Mustang Pro-Guitar – $63.99 (Xbox 360), $69.99 (PS3), $94.93 (Wii) Rock Band 3 Keyboard Bundle – $44.99 (Xbox 360), $119.95 (PS3), $50.29 (Wii) Rock Band 3 Pro-Cymbals Expansion Kit – $19.99 Rock Band 3 Keyboard – $33.50 (Xbox 360), $52.99 (PS3), $39.50 (Wii)
I remember Scott bought a Pro-Guitar and I haven't caught up on it, but with that lowered cost, it's feeling more worth-while because they have no plans in stopping DLC.
That's not the same pro guitar. The Mustang Pro Guitar is not also a real guitar. It is just a plastic guitar with a button on every string on every fret so that you can play songs in pro mode. The Rock Band Fender Stratocaster that I have is also a real electric guitar.

Yep. I also have the same. And I know it's a real guitar because I've been using it to play Rocksmith, which IMO is a MUCH better game for learning how to play guitar than RB3.
I've never owned any Rock Band or Guitar Hero stuff. It was always just a game that was sorta okay to play with other people. Never could really get into it.
I think that new rock band is a great idea. I don't really have personal interest for it, but I have found out that college kids are renewing natural recourse and there are new college kids every year and there are lots of people who have just in last few years bought their first own consoles and are in the perfect for rock band position in their lives.
I'm ecstatic with Rock Band coming back. The biggest win is that the article mentioned that 95% downloadable content will be transferable to new systems. This will affect my purchase of a next gen console. (As I'd have to buy an Xbox One to get all the songs from my 360, but it's about 700 songs) If Harmonix wants to keep an audience, they need to keep the interface simple, no fail modes must be included, and peripheral connection and cost should be improved.
Hey, but now's a good time to buy since just about everything is 50% off. And they have been slowly releasing DLC.
