Throw it during a quiet time when there aren't many zombies.
I played Left 4 Dead in the best way I think you can play a four player co-op shooter. Three friends all in the same room, up late with the lights off and lots of snacks. I really think all of us being together added to the mood and experience of the game. The simultaneous "OH SHIT" when you accidentally startle the witch after being vomited on by a boomer, and then the mass panic as you freak out and twitch your index finger furiously with hopes of staying alive. I think the only thing that could have been better was playing it on the PC. I'd prefer to play it on the PC, but none of my friends really play PC games. Playing it on the 360 meant not playing alone. Sure the mouse is better, but I have nothing against the analog stick. My only issue, the game doesn't have the layout I'm used to, so I had to adjust, and I wasn't as capable as I usually am. If you haven't play Left 4 Dead yet, get some friends, shove them in a dark basement, and get to the zombie slaying action.
BronzDragon, two friends of mine, and I just made it to the boat house in Death Toll on Expert. However, BronzDragon has disappeared, so now I hate him. He should be stabbed repeatedly in the groin. EDIT: He came back some time later. However, the host left before we could finish, though we came up with a good strategy, and we're convinced we can do it. Also, perhaps he can be stabbed only once now. We had one game where it was just me left, and I died right in front of the boat, as I was pretty much pressing jump to get on. It was both hilarious and sad.
Finishing a campaign on Expert would be awesome, damnit. If he doesn't come back, I hope someone can replace him. Almost any human is better than a bot on Expert, seriously (not to say that BronzDragon is bad; he was doing very well considering his ping). They might stick together and have perfect aim, but they take too much damage, and can't co-operate with the kinds of actions that are 100% essential on Expert.
Anyone else having problems with the servers? Yesterday we made a "friends only" lobby and 4 of us started playing some co-op, at the middle of the game, a friend had to go, so he dropped off and before our other friend could join, a complete stranger joined the game, so we boot him out, but it kept happening over and over again, preventing our other friend from joining. Problem is, out of all my friends, I'm the only one that speaks both Spanish and English, so not being able to communicate sucks for this type of game.
I'm pretty sure "friends only" is restricted to only friends. However, the way it works is that a friend of anyone in the game can join, and sometimes even friends of people who were recently in the game but no longer are. Consequently, if any of your friends is a "Steam friend whore" like myself, it's possible you'll get randoms. It can also happen if you're just unlucky, and it was people trying to join friends of theirs that might have been in that game earlier (though it might be unlikely if you were playing a long time)
It seems the Valve matchmaking system is to blame, I did some reading over at the L4D forums and it seems that the matchmaking system bypasses the "friends only" restriction.
Just got the game a few days ago and have been playing through the normal campaign. Blood Harvest: Farmhouse Finale was giving my group serious trouble until we found a solution where we just hold up in the barn by the ammo stash instead of the house. Since there is no way to get in for the Horde outside of climbing the wait for evac becomes incredibly easy. The APC also stops right besides the big opening in the barn so you can practically jump into it. Has anyone else found any helpful/broken places to hide out for the final confrontations?
"Broken" places are absolutely essential on Expert. My friends and I found out a few things playing Death Toll on that difficulty:- 1) Toilets are awesome. 2) On the third level, there is a door that no kind of zombies can get through at all (but bullets seem to penetrate it). One guy beat a zombie horde alone with that door, and two of us beat a tank, though he did a wallhax shot through the door and got me. 3) At the end of the campaign, either camp the toilet in the boat house, or run back to the hut before it. We're not sure which is better.

I think that's what I dislike the most about the game. Once it's on expert, you have to sit in a room and mow the zombies down by funneling them to a single doorway. I personally don't believe that involves skill. what's skillful is having us all out in the open yet still able to win out. Valve needs to tone down the expert setting so it isn't about camping to survive, I think.
Well, you'll never get anywhere by spending all your time in the same room. You still have to go out in the open plenty. If you don't like the gameplay style you need for Expert, then don't play on Expert. Advanced is fine if you want to be around in the open a bit. Additionally, I haven't tried it (except for the impenetrable one =D), but I'm very sure you can't just sit in a room when a tank is coming on Expert.
Essentially, the effectiveness of camping a single room is simply a function of the game design - everything is much more dangerous in the open. Toning down the difficulty is not a sensible approach; you would need to redesign the game.
No, you're right. When a tank comes, you have to leave the room still. I guess advanced has the right balance of "holy shit, we barely made it in the end" but I still feel it can get harder without the insanity that is expert right now. Rym, Scott, Sycar and myself made it through Death Toll on advanced and we always had med packs to spare til the finale. The finale was when we finally lost people and had a bit of trouble but we still made it on one go, if I remember correctly.
Outside of that little problem, I'd say the game is perfect. My only other complaint, which will be dealt with in good time I hope, is that Versus only has 2 of the maps available. In another week or so, there should be a shit-ton of custom maps to play too, so all we need is a server that plays them.
A difficulty level between Expert and Advanced might be reasonable, but I'd still argue that it's unneccessary. In the meantime, if you want more skilled play, I guess it's best to stick with Versus. What's interesting is that Versus also has difficulty settings; the game just doesn't tell you about them. Versus on Expert, now that's insanity.
One issue I have with Versus is that as Boomer it's always optimal to just spawn right around the corner from the survivors and get them ASAP. Smoker and Hunter are more flexible, at least.
The Difficulty Multiplier has to do only with the map, I believe. The last mission tends to have a Multiplier of 2.0; earlier maps progressively lower.
The actual difficulty setting is only set by the server; if you use the Valve Server browser and/or Steam Friends to see server statuses, it's exactly the same as co-op: the server will appear as L4D - Versus - Normal. The vast majority of Versus servers tend to be on Normal.
We should get an all forum Versus match going tonight. Participation requires that you don't rage quit once the zombie rape begins. My only stipulation. Anyone else up for it?

Yeah, we should do it on the other campaign, too. The first campaign is too predictable.
Comments
Step 2 - Take out pipe bomb.
Step 3 - Get vomited on.
Step 4 - Throw pipe bomb.
Step 5 - All is well.
Profit!
1) Explode yourself or allies with it
2) Throw it somewhere where zombies have trouble getting to it, so it can't kill too many

Any idea on how to fix this?
