At this point, you make a T.M. slave out of a legendary or Pokemon you don't care about, fly to where you need, then switch them out. If you need to surf, you can switch one of your Pokemon you want to train out, and rotate the Pokemon you're training.
So a whole bunch of unnecessary extra work? If they would just give you a boat and a plane, you wouldn't have to do any of that extra tedious shit.
Yeah, but which of our ideas is more likely? That's part of the charm of Pokemon, is making your way through the game world with just your Pokemon and whatever items you find. Having a boat and plane is so uncharacteristic of Pokemon, it wouldn't feel right. What is this, Final Fantasy with an airship, submarine, and chocobo?
I understand why they make you wait until you can get an HM so that you can't advance past certain points in the game when you're not supposed to. But it's always bugged me a little. I have an Arcanine who can supposedly run 6,200 miles in 24 hours, and is bigger than a horse. Why do I need to buy a bike before I can ride anywhere? I've got a giant alligator who was born to be aquatic, and can swim places on his own just fine. Why does he have to be taught to swim places? Why does my giant bug with scythes for arms have to be taught to cut down trees using its giant scythe arms? Why does the giant bird have to be taught to fly? It would be great if certain pokemon could just naturally do things for you throughout the game depending on what they are, instead of relying on HMs. I'm not sure how they'd pull that off without letting you cheat, though.

I think this is a major problem in video games today. Game designers are making gameplay mechanics suffer or making the world suffer at the expense of each other for no reason.
Take Metroid for example. In the story of Metroid Prime, Samus has a ton of items from the previous mission. But now she goes on a new missions. So what do they do? They come up with some ridiculous reason for her to lose all her weapons. It sticks out like a sore thumb in the story. It's just so hackneyed, and your suspension of disbelief is ruined. In the olden days they wouldn't even say anything. They didn't explain what happened to her weapons between Metroid 2 and Super Metroid, even though it's a direct sequel.
Zelda 2 is a direct sequel of Zelda 1, but they didn't even say anything about Link not having any of his items from Zelda 1. Did you even think about what happened to the red ring of the silver arrow? No. It's usually a good idea to just ignore the fact that the story and the game don't make sense when put together. Just ignore it.
If there is a mechanic making your game suck, just change it. Make the game suck less. If you can't figure out a way to explain it in the world, just don't. Just make it so the HM doesn't take up a slot. Simple as that. You don't need to explain anything. Just do it.
You now realize that Strength is not a Fighting move and Rock Smash is not a Rock move.
I understand that, but I was saying that there are some Fighting type moves that COULD be used like Strength and Rock Smash. I understand that Strength is a Normal type and that Rock Smash is a fighting type, but why couldn't Close Combat work like Rock Smash? Rock types are already weak against Fighting types, why can't you use any Fighting attack break rocks?
Maybe they should let you have 6 pokeballs on your belt and 6 pokeballs in your backpack. The ones in your backpack can't be used in battle, but you can switch from your belt to backpack between battles without using the computer. However, if a pokemon in the backpack has an HM, let us use the HM move on the map without having to switch the pokemon to the belt.
I always felt the reason water Pokemon needed to be taught Surf was that they needed to develop the ability to be able to carry you while swimming, including swimming close enough to the surface that you can breathe. Same idea with flying Pokemon learning Fly, they can fly on their own, but they need a special technique to carry you and fly somewhere. It's still a slightly annoying mechanic, but yeah. Another idea is that maybe the ability to Fly and Surf is a trait that can be taught to your Pokemon by special trainers once you have the right badges, and that becomes an inherent trait of the Pokemon rather than an in-battle technique. It can be accessed via the menu and such, but is not an actual technique.

Kind of agree. I definitely think that Pokemon should either innately know or be able to learn HM moves, but only if they have the right skills. For example, Pidgey should not be able to learn it until it evolves, seriously. RE:
Why is Pokemon one of those games that makes people want to apply logic to it when it's very obviously an abstract game. Nothing you get in terms attacks has that much variation on the damage/stat damage/status effect changes. It would be completely amazing if you could pull some of the things you see in Pokemon Adventures but for that you'd need Burning Monsters.
Duh, mate. Spearow is pretty much the same size and concept as Pidgey, ie. same application of my point.
Sure they're the same size, so why couldn't you just keep a consistent example with Spearow? Nothing kept you from that, right? I mean, it's just one word. Though even if you did use a coherent example of Pokemon, you still change midway from talking about some 'right skills', whatever the fuck you think that means, to 'size' with a size-joke comic example.
It's an arbitrary list of Pokemon species that can learn the HM, big fucking deal. Imagine it to just be a balloon that gets steered by the Pokemon using Fly or some shit like that. Scyther would obviously be unable to do that with its stompin' feet, scythe arms and weak wings (fucking bugs).
I think the Wotter is going to end up being Water/Ice, but Water/Fighting would be pretty cool, Smugleaf might end up being Grass/Dragon, which would be the coolest thing ever when it comes to starters.

Or how about we just give all of the Pokemon guns, and make it a first person shooter. Call it "Pokemon Cap"
Broccoli Monkey is number 3.
