  • You know, I've seemed to have passed this by. Other than Pokemon Snap and Pinball, I've never played a single Pokemon game. Where's a good place to start?

I remember when I named a Pikachu "Postoffice" back in Sapphire, I don't have a DS so I have not played anything after. .___.

Although I really want to get a DS. XD

HeartGold or SoulSilver. It's always a good idea to get one of the newest ones. Platinum will also do in a pinch.

I would actually suggest starting with Fire Red or Leaf Green for a few reasons.

    1) It's cheaper, so if you don't like it you lose less money.
    2) It is a modern remake of the original Pokemon game. Starting at the beginning is good.
    3) Because it is the first, it has many more Pokemon you are familiar with, and is a lot less complicated than some of the newer games.
    4) It provides good context for the Pokemon Adventures manga.
    5) Has a little bit less nonsense than the other games. No running all around the map trying to get Mesprit.
    6) Pretty sure can put it in a GBA slot on a DS or DS Lite to load your Pokemans into one of the modern DS games. Classic high quality Pokemans won't go to waste.
  • I have to add one more item to Scott's list:

    7) If you start with the newest you will find the older games to be missing features that you have gotten used to.
  • I decided to switch my Nidorino out of my party for being awful and put in a Rhyperior instead. Apparently, Rhyperiors can shoot Geodude out of the holes in their hands. This raises an interesting question: why the hell is this not used in the games? Rhyperior's signature attack shouldn't be Rock Wrecker. It should be Geodude Cannon, and it would be the most awesome attack in the game.
  • Apparently, Rhyperiors can shoot Geodude out of the holes in their hands.
Taking six Geodudes to a whole new level.

Didn't you catch all pokemon in Platinum? Have you NOT read what the pokedex says? HOLY CRAP. It's a sweet physical tank that can dish out some nasty damage.

I caught all of them except Celebi, and I have read most of them. I obviously didn't finish, though.
  • So I'm stuck in Goldenrod City, playing the Voltorb Game trying to get 2,100 coins for the Dratini. It will happen.

    LOL

Was it an error in translation?
  • I didn't even see anything wrong with that picture until I Scott responded.
  • Was it an error in translation?
Nope, Golduck is called Golduck in both the Japanese and English translations. Psyduck is called Koduck in Japanese, which means supposedly "little duck". So it's just Game Freak and Nintendo messing with people's minds again. Another one:

  • I had to think about that one too. At first I was all, "Wait, it makes total sense that Sabrina would give out the Soul badge" and then I was all "Oh".

I just lost 9 levels of Staryu training, my 8th badge, and my Ho-Oh due to not realizing I hadn't saved. A random Stantler encounter knocked the SacredAsh out of Ho-Oh's grip, and I just thought "Oh, I saved at the last Pokemon Center. It'll be alright," and restarted. 2 hours of gameplay, poof.

I haven't done something that dumb in years. Derp. On the plus side, my Staryu still knows Psychic, Ice Beam, Thunder, and Recover, so it's alright.

  • Wait, you can make pokemon faint while they're asleep. How does a pokemon faint, if it's already unconscious?

I imagine punching someone in the jaw really hard while they're taking a cat nap would have a similar effect.

Because they actually die. ^_~ The Pokemon Center just clones a new one from the corpse of the old one. They lie to the kids to keep them from crying. "No, he's not dead. He just... fainted... One moment, and he'll be good as new!"
  • Alright, so Bulbapedia says there are two Master Balls in HG. Who should I use them on? Ho-Oh and Latias?

    Any roaming Legendary Pokemon.

Can't they all be caught with ultra balls?

But roaming are especially difficult, because they can run away. If stationary, you can save before fighting them and try infinitely. If roaming, you could get really close to catching them and then get screwed.

Got it. Just caught my Ho-oh, Vedrfolnir, with an Ultra Ball.

I lost about the same amount when I went shuffling to the kitchen last night and accidentally flicked the power off while juggling the DS and some cheese. It was damned good cheese, though, with some Catawba wine.

Cheese and wine is super-effective against Pogeymans.

My current team leader is a Starmie, level 55, 9 levels beyond the second-highest level pogey in the team, my Alakazam. It's almost unfair to play with this monster. It one-hit KO'd every Pokemon the first 3 members of the Elite Four could muster. I got my ass handed to me by Lance, though. It knows Psychic, Ice Beam, Thunder, and Recover; I'm trying to get it one last super-powerful move to round out the set. If I had evolved it 2 levels later, it would know Hydro Pump, so I'm kind of kicking myself.
  • Never use any ball other than a pokeball to catch legendaries. It's too easy otherwise. Roaming ones are easily trapped.

This. And also, be sure to stock up on LOTS of antidotes. Don't bother with potions, most of your pokemon will learn Recover pretty early on.

Antidotes only for the first forest. Potions are forever useless unless you don't want to keep backtracking to a center.

    But what if my beloved pogeymans get poisoned... ;_;
