  • And yeah, to be an ALT (English teacher) I'd need a bachelor's degree, which by the time I get that Obama would already be gone. Time to look into skilled professions I can learn reasonably quick.

(I'm actually interested in refreshing my college-level Japanese, are there any good programs for iPhone?)
Anki also has an iphone app, but it's twenty-five bucks. Though, they do have a webapp for it that you can use for free, I think. Other people probably have better suggestions.

Also, in other election news, R.W Bray - going for state senator's seat the sixth district in texas - was defeated by his Democratic opponent, Mario Gallegos Jr, who as been dead for almost a month.

Good luck, there. I'm pretty sure "skilled" will translate into more than just having certificates. You'd probably need years of experience, they're probably looking for things like Oracle DBAs, SQL DBA's, etc.

That was the case when I was looking for the same thing, recently. France makes exceptions for skilled workers as well, but even with 5 years of SQL administration experience I don't really qualify.

Actual text conversation between me and my dad this morning:

Me: "Probably moving to Washington and growing weed to pay for grad school. Sorry I'm not sorry!"
Me: "(just kidding pls don't disown me)
    Dad "[blank text]"
Me: "Hahaha, that's about the response I expected :P Have a good day at work, pops!"
Me: "Wait, it occurs to me that you might not have seen ballot results yet, so you might think I'm being stupid or an asshole: weed is legal in CO and WA now."
Dad: "Relax!!!!! I know you're joking. I do believe it should be legalized."
Me: "I probably don't tell you how cool I think you are nearly as often as I should."

FUCK YOU OBUMMER THIS IS A TRAVESTY I'M MOVING TO A DIFFERENT PART OF BROOKYLN [my rent is too damn high :(]
I mainly know of iPad apps, however for decent dictionary apps, imiwa? is good and free. Midori is very good and not free.

  • Maybe I can get some training in automotive repair since I'm already on the supply end of that industry...

Auto repair is a fantastic career. You can make good money. I'm not sure it would help with immigration though, usually they want white collar workers. Actually, the US is incredibly well known globally for it's management. We've created a lot of global management things like Six Sigma and whatnot.

Rym could probably speak better than I could on this, but getting into management might make you more appealing to other countries.

That's silly. Clearly Obama will sink the country so low it's going to take decades to recover, so you should focus on getting what you can out of Obama's student loans policy before you make your grand escape.

Alternatively, try for a different country.

  • I've got imiwa (had that shit when it was kotoba, SON). I've also got iKnow, which was a reasonably good way to learn vocab on PC, but haven't used it much on iPhone. I was hoping for a more comprehensive tool with a more solid teaching system than straight vocab flash cards. I like tools that give you meanings for specific kanji, for example, because it helps with mnemonics.

Obama's gay and gay marriage is gay.
  • I'm taking the learn Japanese conversation here.
  • This is inspiring me to look up French tutoring so I can actually speak the language the next time I go over there. Not being able to converse with random people was terrible.

    Nah, I'm moving to Japan.
Hah! Hah hah hah! Do you know that Japan has WAY more social programs than the US? Nationalized health care, pension programs. You want bureaucratic governement? Japan! Read a book about Japanese taxes and government and then tell me that it is the perfect country for your views. It's really conformist, so if you are a Republican that is all about "I do what I want!" you are in for a harsh awakening. Plus, you don't speak Japanese and you are not college educated. Good luck getting a visa.
I'd like to live in Japan again, but I am under no illusions about its difficulty. Just like any country Japan has its share of political problems.
God, people who talk about emigrating to Japan without knowing anything about the country piss me off. You don't even know the different visa levels, do you? Or that someone has to offer you the job while you are overseas, before you enter the country. I hate the idea of someone moving to the country and being fucking illiterate, unless it is an emergency. You would cause mad meiwaku for everyone.

Well I am on track to being a manager, so management experience would be a plus.

Why must you crush my dream?

Hey, it's a lot gentler than having your dreams crushed by the world at large.
  • edited November 2012
Because your dreams are not realistic, and because it is something that I know first hand. Also, because I work so hard to be a good foreign resident, ignorance like this pisses me off. There are people from other countries who work really hard and dream of getting a job in Japan to escape poverty (like "the Japanese dream"), and the idea that you would move over just because you are annoyed over an election is stupid.

Of course, this happens quite a bit. Just replace Japan with Canada/Australia/Costa Rica/whatever.

The thing most who say this don't realize (especially if they are conservatives), is that just about every single country that isn't a total shithole has higher taxes, a deeper social safety net, universal healthcare, and is overall far more liberal than the United States. As others in this thread said, if you want to escape all that, your best bet is to move to some shithole like Somalia.

  • RESIDENTS OF COLORADO, WASHINGTON, AND CALIFORNIA! I have a question of the utmost importance.

Down here, we drive on the left. You drive on the right. We pass the joint or bong to the left, do you pass it to the right?
  • Without all of those arguments, he's just a black dude.
  • So you don't want to escape any of the things his party stands for, you want to escape one arbitrary human being.

    :D

    Lul.
  • I don't want to escape all that, I want to escape Obama.
    Why?
  • Also, you might escape Obama, but you'll never escape his drones.
  • Yeah, when Limbaugh was talking about moving to Costa Rica I just about died laughing, because Costa Rica is a relatively liberal place, and is all about the environment. When I was there with my aunt, we were talking about the national health trucks that go around to the town and give free vaccines and checkups to the children.
  • Also, you might escape Obama, but you'll never escape his drones.

I'll build my own drones! We'll have drone warfare in the skies!

More than likely clockwise, since that's how water goes down the drain, right?

What are you talking about, water goes counter-clockwise down the drain. You're mental. That's why passing to the left is so important, you're going AGAINST the flow, just as the predecessors of today's stoners went against the flow of THE MAN.
  • I believe weed etiquette is a more universal constant than driving on whatever side of the road.
