  • I may actually fucking buy a 3DS for this game.

    God dammit.
You will not be the only one.
I'm going to make a confession. I have never finished a Pokemens game. I was a wee too old (I'm 34 now) for my friends to really be into it with me so my love kind of died on the vine and I'm not too sure it can be raised again.

I do enjoy reading this thread though!
SON. Pokemon is ageless. You realize this forum is full of 20- and 30-somethings?

Yes. But I was 20 when it arrived in the US and since my social circle didn't show interest, I didn't carry the torch. I always look on it yearningly from afar. Also?

    Pokebattles at MAGFest?
  • Pokebattles at MAGFest!
    FTFY.

  • I am at Versailles now. Fuck you I'm referring to locations by their real world counterparts.

Yeah, but those don't actually come with the game itself. If they did, it'd be a no-brainer come next payday.

  • It's the same price as an XL. If you're getting a 3DS anyway, might as well pimp it at no extra cost.
  • Actually sold my 4 year old NDS and old games and got a 3DS XL Pikachu Edition. The thing is yellow as fuck and goddamn baller.
  • I tried the XL and I honestly prefer the regular 3DS.

Not only have I never finished a Pokemon game, I've never played one, nor do I have any clue about how they played. Or even why whey are played. I'm 33, and I always presumed they were games for 11 year olds, both when the first game came out and even now, out of complete ignorance, I still think it's weird that adults care about them at all.

  • Luke, there's a very surprising amount of depth to the games that most kids would completely ignore. The meta game is a lot of adults play for, the raising of Pokemon for more competitive play. Building teams of Pokemon for more advanced play takes a lot of strategy and research to get right, which is one of the reasons that I usually put multiple hundreds of hours into each game.

Pancham is the most adorable thing ever! Its little karate chop animation is gut wrenchingly cute.

I am spending so much time catching Pokemon that I end up with Pokemon ten or more levels higher than the ones I encounter. False Swipe is my friend.

None of my current team can use it!

There's a dude in like the first town who will trade you Farfetch'd for Bunnelby.
  • My copy is at the post office. Gonna get it on lunch break and play it tonight.
  • Finally got the hang of the Super Training thing. Max EV trained most of my main team (probably not optimally, but better than most, at least). Feels good, man. I've never had EV-trained Pokemon outside of simulators in my life.

I'm putting buying it off until I can be sure playing it won't destroy my ability to do schoolwork. But oh mans, I am excited.

Also, is there any reason to buy a physical version rather than digital download? I like having all my games on my 3DS at once.

    Literally none.
  • I bought a physical copy because I don't own a 3DS. >_> It just came in the mail, in fact. I'm borrowing my girlfriend's 3DS on Wednesday, and I don't have work for two days then. Shit's going to happen.

  • So, apparently, you get benefits from Pokemon Amie, like, for example, your Pokes might score criticals more often, shake off status effects, or survive a killing blow.
  • Well, time to waste copious amounts of time coddling my Jigglypuff.
Which I was already going to do...

Pokemon-Amie is also something I've probably plugged more time into that I should have. Between it and Super Training, I've gotten significantly further behind in the story compared to other people who started playing at the same time as me. I just got the second badge today.

At least now I'm really good at bouncing balls of yarn off of Pokemon's heads.

  • All right plebs I'm a member of the peerage now, so expect writs from Baroness Sofiya
  • Does not wanting to bother with EV training a pokemon unless it has multiple 31s make me a snob?

Also, anybody know if there's a way to check IVs in X/Y before you beat the game yet?

  • But it's fun for me. T_T Anyway that's why the IV checker is awesome. You don't need stupid equations.

You guys play the same level on a stupid platformer for hours until you beat it. Breeding pokemon is the same thing.

EV training and IV (Individual Value for those uninformed) breeding...personally I've dabbled in EV training but really do not care about it that much since I'm more into Nuzlocke runs. A cousin of mine is pretty well versed in IV breeding (*read: willing to spend hours hatching eggs). I can see the appeal in getting the truly ultimate pokemon, but its just way too tedious for me!

    There is a difference.

If you put in many hours at beating a game like say, Super Meat Boy, you yourself have improved. Granted, you've improved your skills at something mostly useless, but the actual human being you has improved in some way. The real you levels up.

When you level up some character in an RPG, like a Pokemon, you don't improve except maybe in your knowledge of that game. You just invest time in making numbers go up. It's Candybox/Cookie Clicker. It makes you feel like you've achieved something when all you've achieved is spending time pressing buttons.
